APA Paraphrasing and Quoting

By using paraphrases and quotations, a writer can incorporate ideas from a source text into their own writing.

Writers paraphrase when they use information from a source text by putting those ideas in their own words.

     Few people would consider the burgers to be big ones; the size of the patty was somewhere between three and four ounces (Muszynski, 2011).

When writers use quotations, they quote the exact words of the source text.

There are three types of quotations:

An Integrated Quote quotes a word or a phrase, not an entire sentence.

     The burgers at Red Robin are "fresh" and delicious.
     The burgers at Red Robin are "fresh" and delicious (Muszynski, 2011). [a citation]
     Muszynski (2011) claimed that the burgers at Red Robin are "fresh" and delicious.

A Direct Quote quotes an entire sentence or more.
   
     Muszynski (2011) stated, "The onion strings stayed extremely crisp, even after sitting on the burger for awhile".
     According to Muszynski (2011), "The onion strings stayed extremely crisp, even after sitting on the burger for awhile".

A Block Quote is for long quotes.
